Take "This American Life", replace Ira Glass with a more witty, tech-savvy host that has the voice of a stoner, and make each show somehow related to gaming (or other parts of geek culture). You now have "A Life Well Wasted," the new monthly podcast by Robert Ashley (formerly of "GFW Radio" fame).
The first episode of "ALWW" takes place on the 1UP offices' rooftop during a get-together commemorating the death of one of the gaming industry's most important magazines, EGM. Ashley, with his likable voice, interviews key figures from EGM's history, resulting in some conversations that are purely humorous, and some that make listeners truly recognize the level of impact that the magazine had on the history of gaming.
The second episode leaves Ashley's history with 1UP behind, taking the host to the homes and businesses of several unknown but prominent collectors of games, in one case for personal reasons, in one case for the purpose of preserving the art form for the world, and in one case for a collector of pinball machines. The opinions extracted from the people interviewed in this episode reveals the reasons behind their collections, and does a fantastic job of making the listener truly care about their passions. Robert even released a "B-side" episode, which included the entirety of a long interview with a man whose mission it is to "preserve virtual worlds." Instead of explaining that statement, I'm going to ask you to go to ALifeWellWasted.com or search for "A Life Well Wasted" on iTunes and download the episode yourself.
It's difficult to describe in text form why in the year 2009 an audio-only production like "This American Life" or "A Life Well Wasted" is worth anyone's time. Most people around the world today, including myself, have grown up in an era in which TV has already destroyed radio as the primary source for entertainment, news, and journalistic reporting. iTunes has brought radio back to prominence in the 21st century, and those who haven't discovered the value of shows like these should definitely give it a shot. Listen to "ALWW" while driving to work, doing mundane chores, or even while playing arcade-style games like the newly released Peggle on XBLA. You'll find yourself excitedly checking your download queue for the next episode in no time at all.
