How To Get Your Girlfriend Into Gaming With Castle Crashers
Opinion Articles

It's pretty common for gamer "bros" across the world to run into a similar problem: their girlfriends have absolutely zero interest in gaming. I'll admit that there are lots of girl gamers out there, but most girls would rather punch themselves in the ovaries than play video games. Plenty of guys with non-gaming girlfriends would be stoked to finally get their loved ones in on the action, and Castle Crashers, available on XBLA, is perfect for doing so.

My girlfriend loved riding the defecating deer (she has a sick sense of humor like me), and the simple control scheme for the game made it so that she picked up everything with relative ease, despite the fact that she rarely holds a 360 controller. So far, she has a level 10 Knight, so we're definitely a significant way into the game.

Many of you might have listened to the panel at last years Penny Arcade Expo on "How to get your girlfriend into gaming." It was an interesting topic and the panelists gave plenty of tips. Kotaku took these tips and published them in summarized form on their own site.

1) Give your girl a game that’s tailored to her interests; don’t force her to play a game just because you like it.
2) Play co-op, not competitive. Some girls are unnerved by 13-year-old trash-talkers.
3) Don’t force her to identify herself as a gamer; it’s enough that she’s playing a game.
4) Spend as much time doing what she wants to do in her life as you expect her to spend time gaming with you (basic rule of relationships).
5) Don’t act like an jerk while you’re gaming – it makes games into the enemy.
6) Don’t belittle her choices of game; maybe she likes Barbie’s Horse Adventure.
7) Let her backseat game you and don’t argue with what she tells you to do; if she tells you to make Master Chief jump to his death, just do it – it’ll be fun for her and get her one step closer to trying it herself. (That’s my own personal rule.)

I can attest to the fact that all of these tips totally work. I can also advise that you choose games that don't have a high skill-roof. Castle Crashers is perfect for this because it's really all about button mashing. Your girlfriend will be able to help out a lot with great ease, and will really feel like a valuable member to your team, whereas with a game like Left 4 Dead she would get killed way too often and feel like a burden. That's also another reason that you should play on no-fail mode whenever warming your girlfriend up to Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

Follow those tips and you might get your girlfriend into gaming. Good luck, and tell me about some other games that you've found to be great for your "lady friends" to get into via the comment section below!
